Wondering what it’s really like to be an Au Pair? Let’s give you a taster of everything included on our visa-sponsored programme, to help you decide if it’s the perfect match.

Every Au Pair's routine can look a little different, so here's some inspiration for what you could be doing.

Your Morning

Wake up the children and help them get ready for school. You'll help prepare their breakfast, school lunch and snacks. Then it's time to pack their school bags and drop them off!

Whilst the kids are at school, you've got free time to enjoy your hobbies, go to the gym, attend yoga or pilates classes, or explore the local area.

Other morning activities include cleaning the children's bedrooms and play areas, or doing their laundry.

Your Afternoon and Evening

Pick the kids up from school and spend your afternoon playing with them, helping out with their homework, or driving them to after-school activities.

Then help out with the children's dinner time before the last childcare activity of the day, which is usually getting the kids ready for bed.

Free Days

You will work a maximum of 45 hours per week as an Au Pair, with defined childcare duties and working hours.

Each week you will have at least 1.5 days off. You'll have one completely free weekend per month, as well as two weeks (10 working days) of paid holiday leave.

Welcome to the USA! Your Au Pair journey begins with our exclusive welcome event, spread over two days.

We've got loads of exciting workshop activities planned, like group Q&As and making your own vision boards. It's your chance to chat, make new friends, and listen to our project coordinators as they share their passion for Au Pairing.

Then we also have a full day of sightseeing! You'll get to see all of New York City's most famous landmarks, from Times Square to Central Park.

We host Au Pair socials every single month. You'll get to form close relationships with other like-minded Au Pairs who are in your local area.

Popular social event activities include:

  • Friendsgiving
  • Group hikes
  • Beach days
  • Barbecues, picnics and potlucks
  • Sporting events
  • Volunteering at the NYC marathon

Our programme is sponsored by the J-1 exchange visa. This means you'll get to complete a class at a recognised US educational institution, as part of the 60 hours or 6 credits requirement. It works out to be roughly an hour of classes per week.

You'll get to choose from a list of available courses during your first meeting with your local coordinator. Popular subjects include photography, US culture, English, and marketing! This is also a great opportunity to make new friends with similar interests!

You will receive $500 to cover these classes, which will either be the full or partial cost depending on the class you pick. If it's partially covered, then your own contribution won't typically exceed $200.

After completing your 12-month Au Pair programme, you have the option to extend your Au Pair placement, or you have 30 days just for exploring America as part of your J-1 visa.

Our Au Pairs become really close and usually end up travelling together. If you fancy some inspiration, check out our USA tours and campervan hires. You'll get an exclusive discount on these - just contact a travel advisor to redeem it closer to the time.

We'd love to hear from you! Get in touch with us today, and our Au Pair specialist can respond to your message and help you start this life-changing adventure.

Please note activities and itineraries are subject to change.

Your accommodation and meals are included as part of your stay with your host family. You’ll have your own private bedroom and be able to choose from a wide variety of locations. Our Au Pairs especially love:

  • New York & New Jersey: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island and Atlantic City
  • Northern California: San Francisco, Napa Valley and Lake Tahoe
  • Southern California: Los Angeles and San Diego
  • Colorado: Aspen, Denver, Rocky Mountains and Vail

We also cover more states, like Georgia, Tennessee and Pennsylvania.
